BookCrossing Singapore is a local site created in conjunction with the national "Pass It On" campaign and the Singapore Bookcrossing.com members.
Here, we want to encourage you to share your books and authors over a cup of coffee or meals. Discuss about the latest book arrivals and characters in books. Analyse the endings with fellow book lovers in Singapore.
BookCrossing was created by Humankind Systems, Inc., a software and internet development company with offices in Kansas City, Missouri, and Sandpoint, Idaho.
The idea was conceived by Humankind partner, Ron Hornbaker in March 2001. Inspired by the success of tracking sites like PhotoTag.org, which tracks disposable cameras loosed into the wild, and WheresGeorge.com, which tracks the US currency by serial number, the idea of tracking books occurred to Ron.
BookCrossing.com was launched on April 17, 2001. Members trickled in at the rate of 100 or so per month until March 2002, when BookCrossing was featured in Book magazine. Since then, BookCrossing has seen about 300 new members per day, and also, enjoyed coverage in various international media. BookCrossing also has its own category in the human-editable Goggle dictionary, as well as been added to the Oxford Concise English Dictionary as a new word.
Currently, BookCrossing stands with more than 640,000 strong membership worldwide and still growing!
